Childline receives almost 6 000 calls during lockdown

PARKTOWN – Despite limited services available, the Childline team has not shunned any callers during lockdown.

Childline Gauteng in Parktown currently serves their beneficiaries through the essential 24/7 toll-free help line service. According to director Lynne Cawood, the issues arising from the Covid-19 pandemic and the national lockdown have been many and varied.

She explained that these range from children wanting information to a premature abandoned baby and abused children requiring placement. She said the mid-lockdown review covering 10 days, indicates that they have taken almost 6 000 calls.

Cawood said the Childline counsellors have been very dedicated throughout this crisis, ensuring resolutions to all their callers’ problems, despite the limited services available.

“We are exceptionally positive that the majority of people in the country have come together, in spirit if not physically, to support one another and ensure the long-term health and safety of all,” Cawood said.

“We are deeply touched by the care and support received from all of you in our extended Childline community, you inspire us to continue the valuable work of Childline during Covid-19 and beyond. Together we can create a caring world.”
