Covid-19: Charlotte Maxeke medical professionals design intubox

PARKTOWN – Medical professionals at Charlotte Maxeke Hospital designed an intubox for worker safety during Covid-19.

Charlotte Maxeke Hospital in Parktown made strides with the latest protection gear against Covid-19.

Posting on social media (Twitter), the Gauteng Province page shared that Professor Feroza Motara together with three other medical professors and doctors from the emergency department and intensive care units at the hospital had designed an intubox.

Communications manager at Charlotte Maxeke, Lungiswa Mvumvu said the intubox was an idea of the emergency services specialists who took a cardboard box prototype and adjusted and fine-tuned it to meet their standards. She added that the need arose out of the necessity to protect staff members who would have to intubate and treat acutely ill Covid-19 patients.

“The intubox prevents viral droplets spread to the treating clinicians by containing it inside the box. Without the box there will be significantly more risk of exposure to the treating health care workers. It has been tested on patients and is user friendly and easy to store,” Mvumvu said.

Gauteng MEC for health Dr Bandile Masuku shared that the intubox is also designed to protect other critical care patients from infected patients’ virus-spreading particles.

“The intubox ensures safety during any intubation, extubation or aerolising procedure. We look forward to having this in other facilities with the main focus on worker safety especially during Covid-19. We are excited that the hospital team has developed this great tool that will improve worker safety,” Masuku said.

He added that the creation of the intubox is an example of what can be achieved when a health system is patient-centered, clinician-led and stakeholder-driven.

Masuku extended a special thanks to South African Pandemic Intervention Relief Effort, Paramount Industrial Holdings, Maizey Plastics (Pty) Ltd and Aurecon.
