ChaiFM radio station in Houghton a finalist in SA Radio Awards

HOUGHTON – ChaiFM radio station in Houghton is among other finalists in the SA Radio Awards.

The radio show Confidential Brief on ChaiFM is one of five finalists in the prestigious South African Radio Awards in the category Best Daytime Show in the community radio category.

This is a remarkable feat considering that there are around 300 radio stations in South Africa and about 37 million people who listen to radio in South Africa.

The radio show is hosted by Chad Thomas and focuses on topical issues such as fraud, crime and corruption. Guests have included renowned crime fighters such as Willie Hofmeyr as well as infamous figures such as Angelo Agrizzi.

The show also focuses on local affairs that affect the community and local ward councillors, as well as sector chairpersons of the Community Policing Boards, have been on the show.

ChaiFM is based in the northeastern suburbs of Johannesburg that focuses primarily on issues of interest to the Jewish community but has a broad listenership outside of that community and currently has an estimated audience of 100 000 in South Africa and an overseas audience of 15 000.

Thomas was ecstatic at the news that the show was a finalist in the awards. “Radio is an important way of communicating with the community at large.

“We have been really fortunate to be able to speak to community leaders, crime-fighting experts, and even self-confessed criminals such as Agrizzi who have given us an insight as to how state capture occurred and how it has affected each and every South African’s life,” he said.

“However, the highlight of the past year was chatting to world-renowned crime-fighter Willie Hofmeyr. Hofmeyr was the chairperson of the parliamentary committee tasked with writing the all-important chapter on the judiciary in the Constitution for a democratic South Africa.

“He was the head of the Asset Forfeiture Unit and has contributed greatly towards fighting crime in South Africa.”
