181 suspects nabbed in Joburg Central during weekend crime combating operations

JOBURG – Most of the suspects appeared in various magistrates' courts around the Johannesburg area yesterday, 16 March. 


The Johannesburg Central Cluster arrested 181 suspects for various crimes during a crime combating operation during the weekend of 13 to 15 March.

The suspects were nabbed in Fairland, Sophiatown, Brixton and Johannesburg Central among other areas.

The Johannesburg Central Police spokesperson Captain Xoli Mbele said among the suspects, four were arrested for house robbery, eight for common robbery, four for business break-ins, five for domestic violence, one for rape, 30 for being in possession of drugs and 28 for driving under the influence.

“The rest of the suspects were arrested for committing other crimes, ranging from assault, assault with an intention to cause grievous bodily harm, theft, fraud, shoplifting, possession of an unlicensed firearm, malicious damage to property, possession of housebreaking implements, dealing in liquor without a license, pointing with a firearm, public drinking, illegal mining and possession of a dangerous weapon,” added Mbele.

Most of the suspects appeared in various magistrates’ courts around the Johannesburg area yesterday, 16 March.
