Councillor Greenberg encourages active citizenry in Ward 72

SYDENHAM – Escalation will take place, however, this does not always guarantee work completion.

Ward 72 councillor Lionel Greenberg is optimistic that the year 2020 will bring about positive changes in the ward but encourages residents to be active and ensure that their suburbs are well serviced.

Residents are to investigate at how they can become active citizens saying this means working toward creating a clean and neat environment.

He urged residents to work at keeping their streets and pavements clean and also helping neighbours who are unable to do so due to some unknown reasons.

Stormwater drains need to be kept clean and he encouraged gardeners not to sweep leaves down the drains saying this cause major issues during the rainy season.

“By working toward active citizenry, residents help manage their suburb and this also means reporting issues directly to the relevant departments, thus helping maintain and sustain the ward,” Greenberg said.

“Any issues around billing, services needed or the lack of services, these all need to be logged and thereafter I will follow up and oversee what and why issues aren’t being addressed by City [of Johannesburg] departments and its officials.”

Where it’s needed, Greenberg said escalation will take place, however, this does not always guarantee work completion, but it helps create a tracking mechanism on performance throughout the City with all councillors to raise at their meetings.

As part of the start to the year, Greenberg encourages Ward 72 residents to bring about and be the change they want to see.

This means that all residents conform to and apply the by-laws, obey traffic and general law and order, he said.

“When in need of services, I encourage residents to apply and follow the laws – whether it is building plans, business rights and the placing of business signage, even building rubble on a pavement; these all need permission from and are paid for to the City.

“These services are one of the means by which the City is able to continue to render its services; revenue no matter how small or seemingly insignificant helps run the City of Joburg.”
