Maryvale College learners celebrate Valentine’s Day with a difference

ORCHARDS – The school was decorated with posters demonstrating why we need to show our love.

Love, compassion and care was the order of the day at Maryvale College on 14 February when learners held their annual Valentine’s Day special event.

The pre-school and primary principal of the Orchards-based school, Kirsten Smith said it was a successful day where learners also donated perishables to the less privileged.

She said instead of the usual R10 for Civvies Day, learners from grades R to 7 donated food cans and perishable items for the less fortunate, including the Alexandra Old Age Home.

They formed a heart in the basketball quad with great enthusiasm to proudly show off their food packages. “We filled six cardboard boxes and all of which will be taken to the local community projects to help the less fortunate and poor,” said Smith.

Maryvale went a step further and initiated Valentine’s Day to include ‘love for everybody’ from parents, siblings, teachers, and neighbours to grandparents.

The school was decorated with posters demonstrating why it is important to show love for everyone. She added that this helped the children realise that love is not just a romantic notion, but that it can and should be used in a broader context.

Learners also enjoyed a school market of scrumptious candy and popcorn on the day which raised R6 271 for projects at the school.
