Ipid investigation on Matshitela’s death case at an advanced stage
SANDRINGHAM – Ipid said it was awaiting technical reports to finalise the investigation on Webster's case
The residents of River Park said they will continue to support the family of a 34-year-old man who died in Norwood Police Station holding cells in December last year.
Webster Matshitela was arrested by Sandringham police on 27 December last year and found dead in the Norwood holding cells the following day.
According to the family, the police said Matshitela strangled himself in the holding cells with a blanket until he died, however, when they went to see him in a mortuary, his face was full of bruises with injuries all over the body.
Addressing residents who recently marched to Sandringham Police Station, community leader Tsietsi Kungoane accused police of hiding the truth over the death of Matshitela.
“We call for justice in regard to the police brutality which led to the death of Webster Matshitela in December last year. We are calling for the acceleration of the investigation process by the Ipid and give back answers to the grieving family,” Kungoane said.
Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) spokesperson Sontaga Seisa said the investigation into Matshitela’s death was at an advanced stage. “We are awaiting technical reports to complete our case.”
