R1 million worth of Prasa’s stolen goods recovered by Bramley police

BRAMLEY – The recovered goods included wooden railway sleepers belonging to Passenger Railway Agency of South Africa.

Bramley police recovered suspected stolen goods worth more than R1 million during a crime prevention operation in their policing area on 17 January.

According to Captain Molefe Mogodi, the spokesperson for the station, officers stopped a 26-wheeler truck which was fully loaded with goods and questioned the driver.

“The driver informed them that he was an employee of the truck company and was only there to transport the goods to Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape province,” Mogodi said.

While still at the scene, a man approached the police and confirmed that the goods belonged to him. He apparently told the officers that he buys and sells goods but failed to produce proof of purchase for them, added Mogodi.

The goods included wooden railway sleepers and this prompted the police to summon Passenger Railway Agency of South Africa (Prasa) officials to the scene.

Mogodi said on arrival, the officials confirmed that the sleepers belonged to Prasa and according to them, the sleepers were illegally attained.

“The goods, with a value estimated at over R1 million were then handed over to Prasa officials.”

The suspect, believed to be in his 80s, was arrested and detained at Bramley Police Station.

Mogodi said the police would investigate further the possibility of other people being involved in this crime.
