Knewlight non-profit organisation provides free IT courses to the local youth

ALEXANDRA – The organisation in partnership with the local day care centre, Boitumelong hosted a graduation ceremony for those who successfully completed the training.

Only those who dedicate their time and commit themselves to the discourse until the end of the journey will reap the fruits of their hard work.

This was the message from University of Witwatersrand information technology (IT) graduate and the co-founder of Knewlight non-profit organisation, Thabo Shokgolo, during the graduation ceremony of local youngsters who were part of the organisation’s programming and coding programme.

The organisation, in partnership with the local daycare centre, Boitumelong, hosted a graduation ceremony for those who successfully completed the training. Only three participants out of many who started the training programme in February this year persevered until the end. Junior Nkata, Jan Mokoena and Lehlohonolo Mokubung were awarded certificates after they successfully completed the course in web design and programming.

Shokgolo said the initiative was aimed at equipping financially disadvantaged youth from the township who aspire to work in the IT field by providing free IT courses.

“Freecodecamp is an initiative of our non-profit organisation Knewlight that targets unemployed youth in Alexandra. The programme has been running since February this year focusing on teaching local youth the basic skills of computer programming with a focus on web development and fusing these technical skills with frequent discussions about life difficulties. The programme started with many youngsters but only the three managed to finish. We want them to be part of those providing solutions in our society,” he said.

Shokgolo added that the registration process for next year’s programme was open and those interested to be part of the programme can visit Boitumelong Day-Care Centre in 6th Avenue for more information.
