Ceremonial reopening of the M2 bridge takes place

JOBURG – After the eight-month construction period, the M2 Bridge has officially reopened.

The official ribbon-cutting ceremony for the reopening of the M2 bridge took place on 31 October.

The ceremony was attended by Gauteng Premier David Makhura, City of Johannesburg Executive Mayor Herman Mashaba and former Inkatha Freedom Party leader Chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi.

The motorway is the link between the N3 and the Johannesburg inner-city. It closed in February this year after the Johannesburg Roads Agency found it had structural defects which had to be repaired.

The M2 bridge will be officially opened for motorists on 4 November.

Metro police head chief David Tembe said during the time of the closure more than 300 Metro police officers were deployed to control traffic and alleviate congestion at critical points in the inner-city and surrounding areas.

The opening had all the bells and whistles with the mayor giving the keynote address, saying he was with pleased with JRA’s work and their decisive action to repair the motorway and ensure the safety of the city’s residents.
