City awarded waste pickers integration award

JOBURG – The City has been in the process of registering waste pickers as efforts to minimise waste

The City of Johannesburg’s Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries was pleased to announce that they had won the Waste Pickers Integration In the Municipal System 2019 award that recognises local and municipal cities which have excelled at all levels in sustainable development.

MMC for Environment Infrastructure Services, Nico de Jager said the City was honoured as they were devoted in implementing waste minimisation. “Given the City’s ultimate objective of waste minimisation efforts were concentrated on engagement with waste pickers, one of the key stakeholders in increasing the yield of recyclable materials diverted from Pikitup landfill sites,” he said.

De Jager said the City was undergoing a process of registering waste pickers, with 1 200 already registered in Region D by the department with the help of Pikitup.

“The registration is conducted to afford waste pickers training opportunities.”

Pikitup is also refurbishing dumping sites in an effort to make provisions to accommodate the waste pickers.
