Theft out of motor vehicle rife in Norwood police precinct

NORWOOD – The scourge of theft out of a motor vehicle is increasingly prevalent in the Norwood police precinct.

Police are warning members of the public within the Norwood police precinct to be more vigilant as the scourge of theft out of a motor vehicle is common in their area.

Norwood Police Station spokesperson Sergeant Eric Masotsha said these incidents occur daily within the precinct. “Residents should not leave their valuable items in visibility in their vehicles as we encountered these incidents on a daily basis.”

Some of the suburbs and areas within the precinct where these crimes are occurring include Norwood, Houghton, Waverly, Melrose, Linksfield, Victoria, Fairwood and Orange Grove.

He encouraged residents to report any suspicious activity to the police. He said usually these suspicious activities often lead to a commission of a crime and if reported, crime incidents can be averted.

However, following their routine and an intensified operation to root out crime in the precinct, several arrests were made from Monday, 7 October until Saturday, 12 October.

Masotsha confirmed that the police’s efforts yielded positive results as several suspects are behind bars and expected to appear in various courts.

Three suspects were arrested for attempted murder, one suspect for robbery, three for assault under domestic violence and one suspect for a rape.

Other arrests include one suspect arrested for possession of drugs, one for assault to do grievously bodily harm while only one suspect was arrested for drunk driving and the other two for possession of suspected stolen goods.

He said they also arrested two suspects for shoplifting and one for common assault.
