Unlucky ‘burglar’ caught by residents

KEW – The suspect was rushed to the nearby Alexandra Community Health Centre.

An alleged burglar was unlucky on 27 August when he attempted to break into a house in Kew.

According to the owner, Mike Thobejane, the burglar jumped over his wall and tried to break into the house.

He said he was called by his daughter-in-law to rush home after the residents had helped her apprehend a burglar.

“There was no one in the house when he jumped over my wall into the yard and tried to break into the house.

“Fortunately, my daughter-in-law was coming home when she noticed the suspect in the yard and called for help. The community came to her rescue and apprehended him before they beat him up.”

The suspect was rushed to the nearby Alexandra Community Health Centre where he was apparently treated.

Police confirmed the incident and said the man was rescued by the Bramley police who were on their patrol duties.

According to the cluster spokesperson, Captain Steve Malatji, the man was indeed found inside the yard after he had jumped over the wall.

“When he was asked by the daughter-in-law what he wanted he instead lied that he was actually working at the house because the owner doesn’t know him.

“He tried to flee but the daughter-in-law gave chase using her car. She yelled for help and the community came to assist and apprehended the suspect before they beat him up.”

The suspect suffered a minor head injury and Malatji said he was discharged from the clinic and handed over to the police.

“He is in police custody and was charged with trespassing. At the time he was apprehended, he had not yet broken into the house and stole anything, thus a minor charge of trespassing,” explained Malatji.

Details: Bramley Police Station 011 445 4113.
