The newly appointed Highlands North Boys‘ High School principal is eager to restore pride at the school and aims for good results at the end of the year.
Mike Masinge was recently appointed as the a new principal by the Gauteng Department of Education working alongside the school’s governing body.
He has more than 32 years’ experience in the teaching profession and was previously head of department at the neighbouring Waverly Girls’ High School.
Prior to Waverly, Masinge was a teacher at John Orr Technical College in Milpark as well as Denver Secondary School in Malvern, both in Johannesburg.
According to Masinge, he is keen to transform Highlands North Boys’ into an institution that produces credible future academics.
He said that he has hit the ground running, considering the timing of the two most important dates in their school’s calendar – preliminary matric examinations and the celebration of the school’s historic 80th birthday on 31 August. “So, you can see that we are on our last push of the year. We have exams currently underway, final ones coming later and the big celebration of our history,” Masinge said.
“The expectations are very clear, we need to get all things right but mostly our learners in class learning and teachers teaching. We need to achieve those goals and ultimately get good results at the end of the year.”
He also said that it is important that they uphold the rich history of the school, which is why the school’s 80th birthday celebration is such an important date.
Masinge added that the school’s current system is moving well – thanks to then-acting principal Lawrence Nayger – and he has no intentions of changing it.
Meanwhile, the new principal has described the mood at the school as jovial and saying that everyone is looking forward to the newly restored institution of learning.
