Police arrest 30 suspects for selling counterfeit goods in Joburg CBD

JOHANNESBURG – Suspects arrested for selling counterfeit goods.

Police have arrested 30 suspects during a counterfeit goods operation in the Johannesburg CBD on 7 August.

The suspects are undocumented foreign nationals and have been detained at the Johannesburg Central Police Station.  JMPD Chief David Tembe said collaboration with other law enforcement agencies was key to maintaining the rule of law.

This raid follows after police were attacked by alleged foreign nationals with objects including bricks and petrol bombs while they were conducting an operation on the trading of counterfeit goods. On 2 August, Joburg Mayor Herman Mashaba visited the area.

“With what happened, I needed to come and see what really transpired and engage the community to see exactly what happened,” said Mashaba.

“I cannot accept seeing our law enforcement agencies being attacked in that manner. It is totally unacceptable.”
