Man with illegal gun arrested at a bar by police

JOHANNESBURG – The firearm was confiscated after the suspect failed to produce a licence.

A 23-year-old gunman was arrested by the Johannesburg police in conjunction with the Gauteng traffic police officers on 29 July.

The incident happened at a night club in downtown Joburg according to the Johannesburg Central Police Station’s spokesperson, Captain Xoli Mbele.

Mbele said the arrest came through following a tip-off from members of the public who noticed the suspect carrying a firearm and alerted the police.

“The police went into the bar and saw a person fitting the description given and upon searching him they recovered an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

“The firearm was then confiscated after the suspect failed to produce a licence. The firearm has been sent to ballistic testing to ascertain if it was used in the commission of serious and violent crimes.”

An investigation is under way and the suspect has since appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court.

Mbele commended the community for giving police positive information adding that a good working relationship between the police and the community is yielding good results.
