Get ready for the 40th old Eds road race

HOUGHTON – The Old Eds race returns on Sunday, 11 August and this will be its 40th year.

Although the entries are already sold out, Old Eds is encouraging the community, friends and family to go out in their numbers to support runners who will be taking part in this year’s road race.

The annual Old Eds Road Race will return on Sunday 11 August. The race is partnering with the Morningside Country Club Road Runners and Discovery Vitality Run Series and will start at 7.30am and is expected to finish at 10.30am.

“The annual road race is a highlight on our Old Eds calendar and we’re looking forward to hosting this exciting event once again,” said one of the organisers, Mark Mohring.

He said this year is particularly special as it marks the 40th year running of the Old Eds Race. Mohring added, “All participants in the 21 and 10km distances will receive a commemorative gift to mark this occasion.”

This race attracts over 6 000 participants and hundreds of cheerful spectators. “We are working hard to keep disruption to the areas along the route as minimal as possible. All necessary permissions have been granted to host the race and we have informed residents living close to the route by means of letters and flyers.”

Old Eds has highlighted that the following areas may experience some disruption during the race: Houghton Estate, Oaklands, Orchards, Gardens Killarney, Birdhaven, Athol, Abbotsford, Melrose North, with emphasis on avoiding Riviera Road and off-ramp from the M1, 11th Ave, Glenhove. Temporary road restrictions will be in place between 5am and 10.45am on the day of the race.

The organisers had made every effort to ensure the day goes off smoothly and safely.

“JMPD and dedicated marshals will be present along the route to manage the safety of runners, pedestrians and motorists. Should anybody happen to be caught in and amongst the runners on the day, please be patient, and obey JMPD and Marshalls at all times,” concluded Mohring.

The organisers have also employed clean-up services to ensure that the route will be clean of any debris on the completion of the event.
