Metro police’s newly deployed IOC Reaction Unit in action on first day

JOHANNESBURG – JMPD IOC Reaction Unit responds to three separate crimes.

A day after the Metro police’s Integrated Intelligent Operation Centre (IOC) Reaction Unit was launched, the unit responded to three separate crimes in the inner-city.

According to the City of Johannesburg, the unit apprehended a 21-year-old man who had grabbed a taxi passenger’s phone through the vehicle’s window. The suspect was detained at Hillbrow Police Station.

In a separate incident,  a Metro police officer was wounded after four suspects opened fire at officers who approached them during a patrol. The officer was taken to Milpark Hospital and is in a stable condition.

In the third incident, the City said at about 11.55am, a hijacking on the corner of True  and Main Reef roads in Fordsburg was spotted via CCTV at the Integrated Intelligent Operation Centre.

“The officers from the IOC Reaction Unit were immediately dispatched to the scene where they were confronted by three armed men hijacking a female victim. The suspects opened fire at the [officers] who retaliated. Unfortunately, the suspects managed to escape in a silver Mercedes Benz. Thankfully, the victim was able to drive away from the scene.”

The MMC for Public Safety Michael Sun said, “I made it clear to the unit that they should do everything in their means to ensure criminals are taken down. No criminal activity will be tolerated in Johannesburg.

“[Metro police] and especially the IOC and the IOC Reaction Unit, will continue to serve our residents and ensure their safety. I applaud these brave men and women who risk their own safety in order to protect our residents.”

Metro police are actively on the hunt for the suspects that got away and anyone with information relating to these incidents can call Metro police on 011 375 5911 to assist with the investigation.
