Alex Masters Soccer League’s Real Sundowns are Champs of Social Cohesion Games 2019

JOBURG – Alexandra's Real Sundowns masters football team are the new champions of the Gauteng Premier's Social Cohesion Games 2019.

Nigeria’s dominance of the Gauteng Social Cohesion Games has been broken following the triumph of Alexandra’s Real Sundowns in the third edition of the competition.

Sundowns triumphed over a Somalian team, beating them 2–0 in Johannesburg’s Westbury section on 14 April.

According to Lebogang Sibanda, secretary general of the Alex Masters Soccer League which is a social league of the legends of the beautiful game and in which Sundowns plies its trade, the triumph came at the expense of teams such as Tshwane FC (4–0), Diepsloot FC (2–1) and Sedibeng FC (2–1).

“I am delighted that we managed to break the dominance of the Nigerians in this competition, which they have won twice since its inception in 2017 as part of Premier David Makhura’s efforts to forge unity between South Africans and their fellow brothers in the immigrant community,” said Sibanda.

He added that there was no prize money on offer in the competition but the victors were given gold medals and a trophy, with the runners-up receiving silver and the third-placed team silver.

“We hope to defend the trophy come 2020,” said Sibanda who also broke the news that Sundowns had won R17 000 in the Jub-Jub Seven-A-Side Games in Tshwane after a sudden death penalty shootout against KaNkosi FC after both sides were deadlocked at 0–0 in the 90.

“This was sweet revenge for us as we were eliminated in the final last year by the same team, and we hope to defend this cup as well in 2020,” Sibanda said. Sundowns boast legends such as Maimane Alfred Phiri and Caesar Maphalla, just to mention a few.
