MMC Sun makes bold promises to address Ward 73 pressing issues

NORWOOD – Huggett is expected to organise a follow-up report meeting in few weeks' time.

MMC for Public Safety in the City of Johannesburg, Michael Sun, is committed to bringing about safety and order in the north-eastern suburbs.

Sun engaged with residents of Norwood, Highland North, Houghton, Killarney and Orange Grove at the LifeLine Centre in Norwood on 1 April, honouring an invite from Ward 73 councillor Eleanor Huggett.

He addressed various matters at the meeting ranging from safety concerns to urban management.

According to the Sun’s spokesperson, Luyanda Longwe, residents raised serious concerns which Sun has promised to prioritise.

Longwe said residents raised concerns around drug dealing, noise pollution, by-law contraventions, and traffic management as well as the scope of development planning within the Johannesburg north-eastern suburbs.

“The MMC committed that in two weeks residents would see intervention via a Metro police-led integrated Buya Mtheto Operation to respond to complaints related to transgressions of the law, and subject to confirmation via the ward councillor that a follow-up report back meeting will be held in four to five weeks,” said Longwe.

“The MMC indicated that the interventions may lead to some inconvenience to residents, such as increased roadblocks or roadside checks. The MMC also provided his email address for residents to email, so that he could forward matters raised by the community not led by public safety to the relevant MMCs/administrative leadership such as development planning, hijacked properties, Rea Vaya, etc.”

She added that the MMC also indicated that the issue of drugs will be added to his agenda for his proposed meeting with the police’s provincial commissioner.

He urged residents to provide information relating to drug dealing in the area so that the Metro policeK9 Unit can take action.
