Poor Sipho’s Sunday in the park

ALEXANDRA – Journalist's never-ending duty.

He cut a forlorn figure near the goal posts and strained his eyes hoping for the best goals which never came.

Barring occasional whispers with a photographer nearby, he continued the hope to ward off boredom and regret which could have been creeping in as his anticipation turned into missed changes by the teams and the ahh and oohs from the equally restless crowd at Alexandra Stadium.

This was on a Sunday and many minutes into a match which ardent and health-conscious spectators of the beautiful game looked forward to than stretching their pot bellies with the wise waters on impromptu street pubs and taverns which could earn the township global accolades. Though bearing a miniature pot belly himself, not from the wise waters, the scribe continued his Sunday vigil as the dour match failed to live up to his expectation.

He bore the pain and agony as minutes passed and occasionally fanned off irritating flies which sought to block his view from the rare moments when advancing strikers were easily turned back by the opposition defenders.

This was the story of my longtime acquaintance, Sipho Siso, who entertains and enthrals readers in the weekly sports pages of their favourite paper, Alex News. He was on assignment and the damp squib of a game was part of his 24/7 oath to cover like the commitment made by all critical skills like the health and security professionals. Scribes’ work is no child’s play, demands concentration, cunning attention to detail, commitment and ability to withstand boredom.

Sipho did all this on 10 March at the ‘park’ where on occasion, he trudged onto the field during the half-time break to seek the players’ comments, throw in a word or two to them on the negative impact of their lacklustre performance to what should have been a worthy investment of his time, money and fuel.

Nevertheless, he did afterwards, write the story which features in this week’s edition of Alex News.
