Sandringham and Sydenham Resident Association hosts AGM

SANDRINGHAM – This is what was discussed at the recent Sandringham and Sydenham Resident Association follow-up AGM.

The Sandringham and Sydenham Resident Association committee recently held a follow-up meeting to their last AGM on 20 February at the Jabula Recreational Centre.

According to vice chairperson Marli Goldberg, what the committee said a bank account has been opened, and they received R85 000 from the cellphone tower operator, as promised. “At this point in time, no decision has been taken on how to spend the money on community works and the committee is open to suggestions.”

Goldberg explained that in terms of crime, they noted a very recent upswing in petty crime, in particular, theft of personal property and that they urge residents to be careful.

“It was noted that both SAPS and CAP have urged any residents affected by criminal activity, to take the time to report this at either Sandringham or Norwood Police stations. The more accurate the crime statistics, the higher the allocation of resources to the police sector and the better the planning of police activity becomes.”

She called for more volunteers to join the CAP patrollers. “This is not the standard block watch approach but rather patrollers are notified of patterns of crime and expected criminal activity and then requested to assist in passive patrolling of designated areas.

“This appears to be the most effective method of crime prevention and we urge residents to make themselves available.”

Goldberg said they intended to launch two new projects to assemble a dossier of electricity and streetlight outages in order to pressure the City to address these issues. “We have consulted with the previous and current councillors, who have advised that a dossier detailing repeated complaints will be easier to elicit a response than individual complaints.

“We, therefore, request all residents to obtain reference numbers for their complaints from the City to record the date, reference number and street or street corner where the problem is located and record this information on a telegram.”

She said they were set to discuss the practicality of having separate groups for this, and will notify residents of any decision in this regard in the near future.

Goldberg emphasised the importance of AGMs, as the residents are constantly updated on what is going on in the community and it gives them the opportunity to voice their opinions.
