Union of the Jewish Women members unite in common ideas

HIGHLANDS NORTH – One student recited a poem in gratitude to donors and UJW who established and run the Aftercare.

The Union of Jewish Women (UJW) branches from across South Africa, gathered on 25 February to share ideas and interact with one another.

The event, held at Hebrew Order David (HOD) Hall in Orchards, was filled with eager ears and passionate individuals wanting to ‘rise up to the challenge’ at the union’s interim meeting.

Speakers from various parts of the society took turns to share advice and their experience. Delegates were treated to an intimate dinner and musical entertainment from Dan Vee with a performance by the Alexandra Aftercare students who sang and danced for the audience.

The meeting was attended by UJW’s national president Myra Goldenbaum and Brigitte Youngworth who began the day with an inspiring D’var Torah.

According to executive director at the UJW’s Johannesburg branch, Cyndi Kree, Howie Tucker spoke of his journey of recovery from Guillain-Barré syndrome while professor Anton Harber spoke about social media and the consequences and challenges thereof.

Lesley Rosenberg, principal of The Mitzvah School, told her story and introduced one of the school’s top student to the delegates attending the meeting.

“We also had commissioner Angie Makwetla who spoke of the reality of child trafficking in South Africa today, while Wendy Kahn discussed anti-semitism in South Africa today,” said Kree.

“Guests were delighted to a delicious tea, and on return heard from Rozanne Sack about child abuse in our own community. The audience, expecting to hear from Alan Browde of SAHarvest, were also treated to Roni Kahn, of OzHarvest who told her story of fighting food waste and food insecurity.”

Ending off the day, Ruth Ancer, clinical psychologist, spoke about Facebook and the isolation it can bring with her talk 683 Facebook friends, so why am I feeling so sad?

National delegates and their hosts ended off the interim meeting with a relaxed dinner at Sydenham Highlands North Synagogue, where they enjoyed a fun evening with interactive musical entertainment from the Drum Café.
