Puntans Hill Cricket Club records thumping win over Randburg

HIGHLANDS PARK – Puntans Hill Cricket Club records 184-run win against Randburg.

One way for the new Puntans Hill Cricket Club to garner support is to record big wins.

It did just that when its SA4 team travelled to Randburg Cricket Club for a league game and beat them by 184 runs. Warm weather and clear skies greeted the players from Highlands North when they arrived for the 35-over game on 23 February.

The hosts won the toss and sent Puntans in to bat first, which seemed like the right decision when they had the visitors on 78 runs for the loss of four wickets at drinks.

But a 100 not-out by captain Sashlin Govender off of 40 balls gave the visitors momentum and carried them to 246 for the loss of six wickets at the break.

Govender shone again with the ball when it was time to bowl, taking four wickets for 11 runs. He, along with Dominic Fontein (three wickets for 12 runs) saw the collapse of Randburg for 62 all-out in 22.4 overs.

“We are a new club, just in our second season, and we are now settled. We are playing good cricket,” said Puntans chairperson, Sean Naidoo. The club also has a side in the SA6 league and both are doing well.

Naidoo said Puntans Hill wanted to establish itself as a force to be reckoned in the Gauteng Cricket Board leagues before it approached sponsors, which it will do now. Until now, the club facilities (previously called Hilson Park) have undergone renovation at the players’ own costs.

The club also aims to start more teams and get junior and women’s cricket going this year. To this end, Naidoo invited anyone interested in joining the club to contact him.
