Court sentences robber to 10 years in prison

BRAMLEY – The robber was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

 

Bramley police have welcomed the sentencing of a man who allegedly robbed his victim of a cell phone while visiting a gravesite in Marlboro Cemetery in July.

Kgomotso Munyai was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court on 12 December for armed robbery.

According to the spokesperson for the Bramley police, Captain Molefe Mogotsi, the victim was busy working on a tombstone when the robbery took place.

Mogotsi said Munyai (24) attacked his victim and threatened him with a firearm demanding his cell phone. He then took it and fled the scene. The victim alerted members of the community who then managed to track him. “They gave chase until he was cornered and apprehended in Alexandra,” said Mogotsi.”Munyai was brought to the police station and a complainant opened a case and a docket was assigned to a dedicated detective for investigation. Munyai was charged with robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm.”

He stood trial in Alexandra Magistrates’ Court and was found guilty and sentenced to 10 years’ direct imprisonment.

Mogotsi added that the court also declared him unfit to possess a firearm. Bramley police management has congratulated the dedication of the detective for a job well done. “We also wish to thank the community of Alexandra who said ‘crime must fall’ on that day, for their role in apprehending the man.”
