Remain vigilant these holidays

YEOVILLE – The police are calling on residents and commuters to remain vigilant during the upcoming holiday season.

The Yeoville Police Station is calling on community members to be vigilant as the occurrence of various crimes increase during the holiday period.

Spokesperson for the station Captain Sifiso Mabizela said that during the November and December period, they see a great increase in crime that is often preventable by victims. He also added that often these crimes are difficult to police, detect, or even trace the suspects.

Mabizela said people should watch out for the following types of crimes:

  • Uber and Taxify drivers should remain vigilant when picking up passengers. A common technique used by criminals is to call an Uber/Taxify and lead the driver to a deserted area or dead end before robbing them.
  • Mabizela said that commuters with flat tires should remain vigilant as many criminals pretend to give assistance and will then attempt to steal the victim’s belongings.
  • The Yeoville police are calling on all motorists to keep a lookout for car jamming. Make sure your car is locked and keep belongings out of view. Mabizela added that a primary hotspot in Yeoville is on Raleigh and Rockey streets.
  • Mabizela warned motorists of perjury, fraud and theft of motor vehicles through false pretences. He said that there are a number of cases of car sales via the internet. He said that if a motorist who sold their car is worried that the customer does not pay, they should open a case of theft.
  • Yeoville police are also warning homeowners to remain vigilant during the November and December period due to housebreaking. Mabizela said residents should be part of their community groups and report any suspicious cars or people in their area.
