Gunman arrested In Johannesburg central

JEPPE – A swift and brave reaction by the Jeppe police has led to a man being arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm.

A suspect was arrested after a police officer, from the Johannesburg East Cluster, spotted him showing off his unregistered firearm.

The officer was apparently on his way to work on 11 November driving his private vehicle when he saw a man holding a firearm, at the corner of End and Anderson streets in Johannesburg.

“The suspect was spotted at City and Suburban, a place which is mostly known as a crime hotspot where a lot of armed robberies and prostitution takes place,” said the spokesperson for Jeppe police, Captain Richard Munyayi.

“The officer was driving past when he saw the suspect who was among 10 women and five men standing outside an old, dark building, which does not have electricity, and the man was carrying a firearm. The officer was brave enough to stop his car and the armed man ran inside the building when he saw him. The officer followed him and the man threw the firearm on the ground,” said Munyayi.

The officer picked up the firearm and asked the suspect to produce the licence for the firearm which the suspect failed to produce.

“The officer arrested the suspect and took him to Jeppe Police Station where he charged and detained him,” said Munyayi.

The firearm – which still has its serial number – was booked in for ballistics testing to determine whether it was used in any of the crimes reported to the police.

Munyayi said the 35-year-old suspect was detained and is expected to appear in court soon while police investigations are still ongoing.
