The match, which was organised by their coach, Venita Masisi, was played in Hillbrow on 8 September.

According to Norwood PR and communications officer, Sharon Mtshali, the idea behind this match was to sensitise the youth about the dangerous effects of substance abuse.

“Masisi organised this match because of her love for the children and her community,” said Mtshali.

“She is passionate about the youth hence she is always trying to get youths off the streets to keep them busy by organising matches,” she said.

“The aim of the match was for alcohol and drug awareness, to get the boys to play against the Hillbrow police team in their quest to highlight the plight that many youths are faced with, especially because of drugs and alcohol in our society.

“We had a great team and the kids enjoyed themselves and we also had the Hillbrow Radio Station soccer team participating on the day,” said Mtshali.

Hillbrow police won the match against the Norwood Youngsters and they (Norwood Youngsters) beat the radio junkies in their final encounter.

Mtshali said the day was a success and the youngsters learned a lot and are now aware of the dangers of alcohol and drugs.

“We aim to see the youngsters concentrate on their studies rather than being out on the streets doing wrong things – we want to keep them active and concentrating on their brighter future.”
