Suspect arrested on suspicion of assaulting pregnant girlfriend

JOHANNESBURG – Johannesburg central police arrested a suspect for assaulting his pregnant girlfriend and seven-year-old daughter.

A 31-year-old was arrested on suspicion of assaulting his pregnant girlfriend at a flat on 13 July.

Spokesperson for the Johannesburg Central Police Station Captain Xoli Mbele said that the incident occurred at 6pm on 12 July at a flat on the corner of Cornelius and Von Welligh streets.

He said that the suspect and his pregnant 29-year-old girlfriend had an argument when he allegedly attacked her with a golf club. He is said to have then assaulted her seven-year-old daughter with a belt before chasing them out of the flat.

Mbele added, “The victim was taken to hospital where she was treated and discharged.”

The investigation is underway and the suspect will appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court.

Mbele said, “We are appealing to the victims of abuse to refrain from dropping cases after it has been open. Once an abuser always an abuser.”
