Suspects arrested for kidnapping two women from Joburg taxi rank

YEOVILLE – The Yeoville police arrested two suspects for kidnapping on 18 June.

 

Two suspects were arrested for kidnapping after their victim alerted the police on 18 June.

A spokesperson for the Yeoville Police Station, Captain Sifiso Mabizela said that a female victim along with her friend boarded a taxi from the Noord taxi rank in the Johannesburg CBD at 9pm. While in the taxi, on their way towards Yeoville, they asked the driver what the cost of the ride would be. The driver’s accomplice then took out a firearm and pointed it at the victims.

Mabizela added that one of the victims convinced their kidnappers that she needed the bathroom. The kidnappers allowed her to use the toilet on the corner of Dunbar and Bezuidenhout streets where she dialled 112 to alert the police who arrived at the address in Yeoville.

The police arrested the two suspects and charged them with illegal possession of a firearm and kidnapping. The suspects appeared at Yeoville Magistrates’ Court on 19 June and are currently in custody pending their formal bail application.
