Girls’ home receives a special gift

OBSERVATORY – The Uitkoms Home for Girls received a day of gifts and engagement from the One Campaign on 15 June.

A home for teenage girls received a bit of a boost on 15 June.

The study room of Uitkoms Home for Girls got a lick of paint and a braai was held for the girls.

The 69-year-old organisation takes in teenage girls from abusive backgrounds and gives them support through their schooling. Marketing consultant for the organisation, Tanya Krouse, said the girls are placed at Uitkoms by the courts.

She added, “Our aim is ultimately to reunite them with their families… We clothe and feed them. We take them to school and help them realise that their past doesn’t define them and they do have a future to look forward to.”

Resident social worker at Uitkoms, Noma Moyo, said the organisation runs various programmes such as counselling and educational assistance to help them cope with daily life. They also give the girls life-skills training to teach responsibility for the day they leave the home. Guest speakers are also invited to motivate the girls.

The day saw One Campaign assist in the painting of the study room and a braai for them to inspire the girls.

Executive director of One Campaign in Africa, Rudo Kayombo said, “Today we are commemorating youth day but also we are taking part in the 100-day countdown to Mandela Day. We have partnered with Uitkoms to come to participate in activities and contribute to some of the work they need done and to offer some donations to the home.”
