Hillbrow police reservist arrest heavily armed man

BEREA – The man is suspected to be involved in robberies and heists around Johannesburg.

 

A man suspected to be involved in serious gun-related crimes in Johannesburg was arrested by Hillbrow police reservists in Berea.

The 39-year-old suspect was arrested on the corner of Alexandra Street and Joe Slovo Drive, driving a suspected stolen motor vehicle.

The suspect was heavily armed with four pistols and a collection of ammunition when he was arrested.

Inside the suspected stolen Nissan Navara bakkie, police said they also recovered number plates which belong to unknown motor vehicles.

Jeppe Police Station’s spokesperson, Captain Richard Munyayi, said the suspect was taken to the Hillbrow Police Station.

“They [reservists] approached the vehicle and found the driver sitting alone. They requested he step outside and upon searching, they found him to be in possession of a firearm, which was attached to his waist,” said Munyayi.

“They handcuffed him and searched the vehicle where they found two other firearms, a balaclava and a set of vehicle number plates hidden under a seat.”

Duty cluster police spokesperson, Captain Elliot Tshivhase confirmed the arrest and said the suspect appeared briefly before the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on 1 June.

“He was denied bail and is currently in police custody. Investigations are still underway.

“We suspect he is involved in other criminal activities such as robberies and heists considering the ammunition and firearms he had when he was arrested,” said Tshivhase.

Sergeant Mduduzi Zondo, a spokesperson for the Hillbrow Police Station, confirmed that the suspect was brought to their station.

He said, “He appeared briefly in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court where he was denied bail. He is expected back in court soon.”
