Norwood Young Stars Academy embark on a blanket donation drive

NORWOOD – Donated blankets will be given to the disadvantaged kids, elderly and the displaced people in Norwood.

As part of their Blanket Winter Drive programme, the Norwood Young Stars Academy is inviting the general public to donate blankets to disadvantaged people.

The blanket drive is currently underway and organisers urge residents in Norwood and the surrounding suburbs to support this call and donate blankets.

The drive is earmarked to benefit disadvantaged children, the elderly as well as displaced people who are living in Paterson Park.

Organiser, Sharon Mtshali, who is also a community public relations and communications officer in Norwood, said, “We urge everyone and anyone who might see a need for his or her old blankets to please donate them for the better use of the mentioned needy people in our community.

“Those who want to buy are welcome to do so but we also accept old but clean blankets. This is the first time we are doing this campaign but we believe it will come in handy to assist those who are unable to afford it.”

She said the collection of blankets is currently underway and people who wish to donate immediately can do so by contacting her personally.

She added that they will also be hosting an event on Youth Day where everyone will have a chance to drop off their donations. The event on 16 June will have soccer matches, organised by the academy, as well as food stalls, dancing, fashion shows and arts activities to mark the celebrations.

“On the day, we have lined up a number of activities for people to bring our community together and celebrate this annual occasion in our history.

“This is the day when everyone can then come and celebrate with us and even donate the blankets as well as other resourceful valuables including food.”

Mtshali said everyone is invited to attend, including teams that wish to participate in the soccer matches.
