Spokesperson chief superintendent Wayne Minnaar said that the drivers were arrested in a number of operations where they were breathalysed and arrested if their blood alcohol level was 0,24 or over.

“Their blood samples were taken at alcohol testing centres in Sandton, Randburg, Midrand, Soweto or the Johannesburg CBD. After their blood samples were taken they were transported to the relevant police station where a docket was written up and they were placed in a police cell until they could apply for bail,” said Minnaar.

The arrests were made in the following areas:

  • 26 arrests in Midrand
  • 13 arrests in Randburg
  • 18 arrests in Roodepoort
  • 24 arrests in Soweto
  • 27 arrests in Alexandra
  • 46 arrest in Johannesburg CBD
  • 7 arrests in Rosettenville
  • 47 arrests in Lenasia and Orange Farm
  • 20 arrests on the freeway.

Minnaar said, “It’s a concern that there are still so many people that think they can drive after drinking alcohol.

“A drunk driver’s perception of distance and speed is not accurate, their judgment and eyesight are affected. All this increases the risk of accidents.” He added that many of drunk driving arrests are made after 6pm over a weekend.
