Sandringham Ladies Soccer Team is asking for sponsors

SANDRINGHAM – The team requires soccer balls, gear and training equipment.

The Sandringham Ladies Soccer Team, which comprises mostly domestic workers in the Johannesburg north-east suburbs, is looking for a sponsor.

The team was founded in 2010 by domestic workers in their quest to encourage women to live a healthy lifestyle.

Since its inception, the team has played in various leagues around Johannesburg. It has 23 players and team organiser, Refiloe Leshaba, said a sponsor would go a long way in helping them buy new kit and soccer balls, and cover travelling costs.

“We are also looking for other things like training equipment including cones,” she said.

“We’re also asking for a financial sponsor to help us when we travel to play other teams outside of our area.”

Hilda Hamese, a former organiser of the team and now coach, reiterated that they started the team to encourage women to exercise. She said many senior citizens suffered from chronic diseases. “We have people who are diagnosed with diseases such as high blood pressure and sugar diabetes and through our team, we help to curb and reduce such ailments.

“Playing soccer comes with more training which includes running and sweating and that helps reduce all of those mentioned illnesses.”

With a sponsor, Hamese added it would help sustain the team and perhaps even see more women joining them.

The coach invited anyone who wanted to join to do so either by visiting their training ground at the Fairmount Bowling Club or they could contact her or Leshaba.

She added that only women 30 years old and above were eligible to play in the team.

Details: Refiloe Leshaba 079 537 0762 or Hilda Hamese 078 692 0885.
