VIDEO: ‘My issue is not about petty crime, it’s crime in general’

HIGHLANDS NORTH – Local resident worried that police are not sending out a stronger message to deter criminals.

Highlands North resident Radhika Singh has been left dismayed at the lack of patrolling law enforcement on her street.

Singh shared a video with the North Eastern Tribune from the security camera outside of her house showing a brazen criminal calmly making his way to her front wall door. In the video the criminal fiddles with locks on her door before taking off the door handle.

She said that her anger does not stem from a stolen door handle, but rather from the fact that a private security guard house sits down the road from her home which the criminal would have to pass to get to her front door. She also said that the lack of police patrolling in the area has left her worried.

“My issue is not about petty crime. It’s crime in general,” she said.

“As citizens, we pay for private security and pay our taxes for the police. But there is only so much that we can do as private citizens and when criminals can act so calmly and confidently, attempting something like this, then we have to ask where is law enforcement.”

She added, “I’m not saying that police are not doing their job, but I do think they need to be more proactive. The actions that they take should show that crime is a problem and that they are doing everything to eradicate it.”

Singh said she feels that a message is not being sent through police actions to criminals.

Ward 74 councillor David Fisher said that the problem in Highlands North is well-known and he personally has pushed for better visibility among the police to keep residents safer.

He added that he has been working with the local community policing forums to increase law enforcement involvement.
