2018 will see many challenges and improvements in Ward 73, says cllr

JOHANNESBURG – Ward 73 councillor Eleanor Huggett gives a run down of the developments for 2018.

Ward 73 councillor Eleanor Huggett said 2018 will see many challenges and improvements in her ward, which currently has the largest capital expenditure budget in Johannesburg.

One of the biggest projects in the area is the Paterson Park development. Huggett said the project will include a housing development, recreational centre and rehabilitation to the river on the Orange Grove side of the park, which has become a problem for residents due to the recent flooding.

She said the project is expected to be completed by the end of 2018.

Huggett also said that the Short Street Park development in Norwood is complete and described it as “a real triumph and an asset to the community.”

The Corridors of Freedom project on Louis Botha Avenue has a predicted completion date at the end of 2018. “Two bus stations need to be completed. There are also serious issues with the traffic islands near the Houghton area,” said Huggett.

A number of parks in Ward 73 are also on the maintenance list including Norwood Park, Orange Grove Park, Linksfield Park and Algernon Street Park. She said, “Norwood Park has been taken under the wing of the Norwood and Orchards Residents Association. They have done amazing work to improve the facilities and do maintenance and cleanups on an ongoing basis. I personally wish to thank them for all they do. There is a big issue with vagrants residing in the park and hawkers on its perimeter.”

Though there are no official plans for an upgrade, Huggett said that Orange Grove Park needs basic maintenance and repairs to playground equipment and the ablution facilities. She added, “There is also an issue with vagrants living in the park as well as people playing loud music and drinking. This is being monitored and requests have been put into the budget for the upgrading of equipment. Again, thanks to the residents who keep a watchful eye over this park.”

She also said there will be a push for maintenance at Linksfield Park and Algernon Street Park. She said that Linksfield Park has no playground equipment or ablution facilities but the main gate and fences need maintenance while Algernon Street Park needs a playground equipment upgrade.
