The St John’s College Academy held a special valedictory service on 18 October at the Crypt Chapel, on campus.
The academy is an after-school enrichment programme for pupils from grades 10 to 12 with a focus on mathematics, life skills, physical sciences and English.

Director of the academy, Agnes Nugent said, “The academy, which will be celebrating its 10th birthday next year, caters to boys from disadvantaged backgrounds who attend government schools in the surrounding community of Berea, Hillbrow and Yeoville.”
The pupils are identified by their schools as having great potential in the Grade 9 year and are enrolled in the programme at the beginning of Grade 10.
A spokesperson for the school, Jacqui Deeks said, “It was a very moving ceremony, with some important messages from the headmaster, Paul Edey, the director of the academy, Agnes Nugent, the head of the college, Raymond Barrow and the outgoing head of the academy, Philani Dube.”
Mpolo Ngoywa and Atang Mngomeni were also announced as the deputy head of the academy and head of the academy, respectively.

Dube received a sixth form bursary for 2018 while programme pupils, Mxolisi Mongena and Fezile Shabangu received the Realema Teacher Internship bursary for study and work at St John’s College and The Ridge School.
Nugent added that pupil, Dumisile Dube received the Cappucino Club bursary for his first year of university.
