WAVERLY – The children from Waverly Girls High School were treated to a special interactive lecture by author Buhle Ngaba

In celebration of National Literacy Month, Grounded Media celebrated its 20th anniversary by hosting an interactive lecture at Waverly Girls High School with special guest author, Buhle Ngaba on 11 September.

Ngaba is the author of The Girl Without a Sound, which tells the story of a voiceless girl of colour in search of a sound of her own. A tale which aims to inspire its audience to embrace the power trapped inside them.

Grounded Media purchased over 300 copies, which are being donated to various schools and organisations as part of the Nali’Bali National Literacy campaign, which aims to spread the culture of reading around the country.

CEO of Grounded Media, Coco Cachalia said, “Buhle is a remarkable young woman whose work, both in literature and activism, is inspiring to so many young women.”

“Our company is passionate about developing South African communities and we are very proud that one of the ways we were able to celebrate our 20-year anniversary is by supporting Buhle as she emboldens girls across the country.”

The event was hosted in association with the Tariro Foundation, an organization empowering young women with limited access to resources through skills development. Based at Waverley Girls High School, the Tariro Foundation provides academic support, entrepreneurship training, mentorship and personal leadership development to high-potential schoolchildren from grades 10–12.

Co-founder of the foundation, Thandeka Xaba said, “Changing the dominant narrative for African women is what we strive for at the foundation and it is at the heart of the novel. It is so valuable for our Tariro fellows to be exposed not only to a story with a relatable protagonist but also to an exemplary young woman like Buhle.”
