Gun-wielding suspect arrested by Hillbrow police

HILLBROW – A victim wrestled a gun away from a suspect and got him arrested.

An informal trader who sells braai meat at the corner of Edith Carvel and Kaptein streets in Hillbrow has single-handedly caught a gunman and got him arrested by the police.

This after the gunman wanted to shoot him, alleged the Hillbrow police. According to Hillbrow Police Station spokesperson, Mduduzi Zondo, the trader was busy selling meat when a man approached him, not sure if he wanted to buy or not. It is really not clear what his intentions were, but Zondo said the two ended up in an altercation.

“We understand that the gunman screamed and swore at the trader before a fight ensued,” alleged Zondo.

“He pulled out a gun and pointed at the trader, they then wrestled and the trader managed to win over the gun from the suspect.”

The police were called to the scene and the gunman was arrested and detained at the Hillbrow Police Station, said Zondo. He said the suspect has been charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and he is expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court soon.

Hillbrow police added that 49 suspects were also arrested in separate incidents between 15 and 20 September for committing various offences within their areas of service. They were arrested for offences including fraud, murder, robbery, possession of unlicensed firearms, rape, driving under the influence of alcohol, shoplifting as well as assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

“All the suspects appeared in court and others made bail while others remain in police custody pending investigations,” said Zondo.
