Rand Aid villages kick off Arbor Week
JOHANNESBURG – Three Rand Aid villages kicked off Arbor Day with a tree planting.
Three Rand Aid villages commemorated the beginning of Arbor Week with a special tree planting on spring day.
Spokesperson for Rand Aid Cathy Grosvenor said, “The Rand Aid retirement village plants a tree each year during Arbor Week, which has been celebrated in South Africa since 1983 to raise awareness of the value of trees in our society.”
A leucosidea sericea, commonly known as an ouhout, was donated by Servest which is responsible for maintaining the village’s beautiful gardens. The Tarentaal Village in Lyndhurst, Thornhill Manor retirement centre in Lethabong and Elphin Lodge in Lyndhurst celebrated the day.
Grosvenor added, “The evergreen tree is extremely fast growing with bark that looks old and wisened. The Servest team also dug the hole and prepared the soil for planting.”
The Thornhill Manor event was organised by the retirement village’s garden club chairperson Jenny Brownson, who welcomed all those attending with a reading of the Joyce Kilmer short poem, Trees. This was followed by a prayer of prosperity by chapel chairperson Lynn Peters for the tree and what it would provide for the residents.
