BRT project on Louis Botha Avenue, Orange Grove is causing mayhem, according to a resident
ORANGE GROVE – A resident says the BRT system is forcing traffic into the side roads.
A resident of Joburg has questioned the commissioning of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system along Louis Botha Avenue, saying it causes nothing but chaos.
Tony Henen, a resident of Orange Grove and a local businessman said he found it worrying that the City of Joburg had approved the project, which had caused mayhem for motorists in the area.
Henen added that some side roads that previously afforded motorists to travel easily to other suburbs such as Norwood to Orange Grove, as well as parts of Bramley, have been permanently obstructed, subjecting drivers to take longer routes.
“Firstly, I want to know whether the City of Joburg has done any environmental or impact studies when they initiated that BRT project because now the roads, including Louis Botha Avenue, have become congested.

“Another thing, the project is putting pressure on side roads because of a lack of parking space and some motorists resort to parking next to our houses, creating more problems for us as residents,” said Henen.”All they are doing is forcing traffic into the side roads while the locals have to take long drives to reach their destinations, which in turn, become costly for us on petrol.”
When contacted on 9 March, the City’s spokesperson, Tony Tavern-Turisan could not be reached for comment.
A follow-up email was sent to his office by North Eastern Tribune.
In a reply, Luyanda Mfeka from the office of Tavern-Turisan said they needed to consult with relevant entities first to issue adequate responses to the matter.
“Unfortunately, we cannot respond to your query [yet] as we must first consult with Joburg Roads Agency and related entities. We will respond to the stated questions in due course,” he said.
