WATCH: KES athletes strike gold at Grand Prix
JOBURG – Local athletes produce the goods at Grand Prix Meeting.
King Edward VII School (KES) hosted the Athletics Grand Prix Meeting which saw various schools from across Gauteng take part.
The meeting was attended by 11 schools including St Stithians Boys’ College, St John’s College, Parktown Boys’ High School and St David’s Marist Inanda, and had more than 700 athletes giving their all on the track on a cold day. KES topped the medals scoreboard as the school’s athletes had some fine individual performances.
This event, introduced in 2012, does not keep a tally of team points and is seen as an opportunity to allow individual athletes to shine.
Some of the outstanding performances of the KES athletes included that of Patrick Duvenage, who set a new Grand Prix record in the U19 shot put with a throw of 17m; and Nathaniel de Swardt set a new record of 6.46m and 1.85m in the high jump and long jump respectively in the U15 age group. A delighted Sebastian Freeman, who won the U17 1 500m, said this was a great opportunity for the athletes to showcase their talent.

Simon Thorne of KES athletics hailed the athletes for upholding the spirit, values and sportsmanship of their respective schools and competing to the best of their ability. “Congratulations to all the athletes and well done to the King Edward team on hosting another successful event,” he said.
When asked what had been key in the school remaining at the highest level in athletics, Thorne said there was a great culture of athletics within the school. “We always do it for the right reasons, although we want excellence, we want participation from the boys as well,” he said.

- Kenendy Mpeku U17 100m (gold)
- Patrick Duvenage U19 discus (gold)
- Jethro Pieterse 400m hurdles U19 (gold)
- Nathaniel de Swardt high jump (gold)
- Sebastian Freeman U17 1500m (gold).
