WATCH: Big Star turns on the switch for the last quarter of the year

Johannesburg hip-hop sensation Tumelo Rakumako popularly known as Big Star is fast becoming a household name with his unique urban sound.

From being crowned the champion of hip-hop reality show The Hustle last year to having one of the best singles of the year and signing to Vth Season, Big Star has come a long way.

It has been a great year so far for the lyrical genius following the success of his debut single My Year which featured Aewon Wolf. “I am really stoked by the success of My Year, it is still in the charts right now on a couple of radio stations and it’s definitely a success story to tell people about,” said Big Star.

“The reason I won that competition was because of [my versatility] and how I was able to adjust to every challenge. Even now I am still trying to explore different sounds and I do not think I have switched up.”

Big Star, has once again proven his versatility as an artist with this new single Understand, and his lyrical prowess, effortless flow and catchy chorus cannot be ignored. The song is about the struggles that come with the hustle, not the usual ‘making it out the ghetto struggle’, but dealing with family, perceptions and expectations.

“I am the type of artist that tries to convey different messages in every song,” he said.

Big Star applauded the progress made by the South African hip-hop industry over the years. “I feel like it is definitely on the rise, it’s growing. There are a lot of businesses and corporate companies that want to start investing in rappers,” he added.

“I am pretty happy with what I have done so far, I am definitely now on the mainstream platform, I am stoked with the first half, and the second half of the year is looking pretty sweet as well.”

The 24-year-old has a lot lined up for the rest of the year and will be dropping his highly anticipated body of work in the form of an EP in two months’ time. “It is always quality over quantity for me and people should look out for my EP later this year,” he concluded.
