Residents make their mark

ORANGE GROVE - Residents come out in numbers to make their mark

North Eastern Tribune residents turned out in their numbers to cast their votes for the 2016 Local Municipal Elections.

The elections took place on 3 August and saw thousands of residents across various wards put pen to paper to elect their new councillors and mayor for the City of Johannesburg.

In Ward 72, more than 1 000 residents turned up at Orange Grove Primary School to cast their vote, with first-time voter, Carla da Silva expressing her excitement.

“I came with my friends and I can’t wait to cast my vote, plus I also know who I’m going to vote for,” she said.

Local Independent Electoral Commission presiding officer, Mary Rapoo-Mudzimu, hailed the turnout as good, adding that it was expected to increase during the latter part of the day.

“We’ve had people here [from] before 7am and it’s been increasing steadily as the day progresses,” she said.

She also gave the turnout figures, which stood at 2 046 at 4pm, explaining that she expected the numbers to continue increasing.

No untoward incidents were reported at the station, and the results were expected to start trickling in soon after the voting stations close.
