A disappointed resident is cautioning fellow Norwood residents to thoroughly screen potential employees before hiring them to avoid falling victim to house theft.
This follows after an alleged theft incident at the resident’s home, which saw valuables stolen by a domestic worker employed by her. The complainant, who wished to remain anonymous, explained that the woman had worked for her for almost two years before allegedly plundering the house of valuables worth thousands of rands.
“This [woman] worked for me for the past 18 months and was responsible for major theft from my apartment, including [the theft of] electronic goods, jewellery and other valuable items,” she said.
“These items [were] housed in a laptop [safe] and electronic safe, respectively, both of which were forced from the wall.”

Following the discovery of the alleged theft, the resident then opened a case at Norwood Police Station and the woman was subsequently arrested and charged.
She urged fellow homeowners to screen potential employees thoroughly and do background checks before hiring them. Furthermore, employers were urged to avoid using those recruitment agencies which did not perform security and background checks on potential employees.
Sergeant Nurse Tshwale, spokesperson for Norwood Police Station, confirmed that the incident had been reported to the police.
“The case has been brought to our attention and we can confirm that a case of theft has been opened at the station,” Tshwale said.
The sergeant further confirmed that computer equipment, including laptops, cameras, iPads and cash had been stolen, all with a total worth of R117 000.
The accused has since appeared in Hillbrow Magistrates’ Court to face the theft charges and is currently out on bail.
