WATCH: Accumulo lawn bowls festival set to be bigger and better

LOMBARDY EAST– Bowls festival to bridge the divide of colour through sport while raising funds for cancer.

The 2016 Accumulo lawn bowls festival is set to be one of the biggest events on the bowling calendar.

The festival will comprise more than 380 participants from across the country and from Zimbabwe and Namibia. The competition field incorporates bowlers of all standards from league or social players to provincial and national Protea bowlers, bowlers in wheelchairs, sighted or visually impaired, able-bodied or physically disabled, young, adult, senior of any race, colour, creed or gender.

All will come together in August at the Bedfordview Bowls Club to compete in one of the three Bowls Challenges to be run over three consecutive weekends.

Lombardy East and Proteas lawn bowls player Desiree Levin said the festival would raise funds for cancer as well as for disability sport.

Owen Calverley of South African bowls said teams at the festival would comprise an able-bodied bowler, a visually impaired or physically disabled bowler, and either a young bowler or bowler of colour.

“The number of invited entries has doubled and the transformation participation has increased to almost 60 percent,” he said.

The festival provides an opportunity for players to measure their performance, skills and prowess against the best in the country and encourages all players across the board to compete in good sportsmanship.
