Suspected hijacker with toy gun shot dead

YEOVILLE - A suspected hijacker was shot dead on the corner of Bezuidenhout and Jolly streets in Yeoville on 9 October at about 3pm.

Constable Thabo Malatji of Yeoville police said, “[The driver], a 58-year-old, was at a stop street when four men approached him. They dragged him out of his vehicle and pointed a toy gun at him.”

According to Malatji, the victim was under the impression that the gun was real and the men were trying to hijack him. “The victim was armed and [allegedly] shot at the suspects. As he fired his weapon and hit one of the men, the other [suspects] ran away. The suspect who was hit, died,” added Malatji. A toy gun was recovered on the deceased.

“The victim contacted the police and an attempted hijacking case was opened. Police are still looking for the other three remaining suspects,” added Malatji.
