LISTEN: Ratang Bana joins forces with Rand Water

Ratang Bana Foundation in Alexandra celebrated the efforts it has made towards sustainable environmental management, since adopting the principles of water conservation through their vegetable garden.

The Ratang Bana Foundation in Alexandra recently celebrated its efforts towards sustainable environmental management and adopting principles of water conservation for its vegetable garden.

Under the guidance of Water Wise, Rand Water’s environmental brand, the foundation has managed to extend the size of its vegetable garden, fence it off and put an efficient rainwater harvesting system in place.

The foundation offers a safe environment for children orphaned by HIV/Aids, and manages a feeding scheme for the local community.

Ratang Bana founder, Ingrid Maredi, was elated by their partnership with Rand Water and hoped that this will help create opportunities for local residents.

“This is a very important day for us at Ratang Bana, we are not employed, but we will employ ourselves. On behalf of the foundation, grannies of Ratang Bana, child-headed households and my unemployed women, we thank you very much,” said Maredi.

Mbuyiswa Makhubela, manager of logistics services at Rand Water said the beauty of the partnership is they did not only give Ratang Bana a new garden, but they also trained them on water-wise principles which will allow them to be self-sustainable. “We are hoping that the community will come and learn from Ratang Bana so that they can implement these skills in their own gardens.”
