St Mary’s School helps collect 12 000 cans of food

WAVERLEY - St Mary's School Waverley recently assisted in the collection of 12 000 cans of food for Phoenix, an inter-school association comprising 13 high schools from around Gauteng.

St Mary’s head girl, Bongiwe Bongwe said, “Phoenix aims to collaborate and create constructive change in their individual communities and, as a whole, in the greater community. The passionate heads of schools use Phoenix as a platform to encourage their student bodies to engage with society.”

According to Bongwe, every year Phoenix runs a food can collection initiative that helps the Jesuit Refugee Service in feeding those seeking assylum in their churches.

“The theme for this year is, We Are 1, a mantra that is poignant to our country after the recent xenophobic outbreaks. The can collection handover event was hosted at St Mary’s School in Waverley,” added Bongwe.

According to Bongwe, many of the schoolgirls attended the handover and the event was a success.
